Our mission is to give our community access to the tools they need to create music or events at an affordable cost. We offer rental, sales, repair, and installation services for musical instruments, live sound, lighting, and staging as well as music lessons in our stores in Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort, Kentucky.

Our Legacy:
Doo Wop started in the basement of our founder, Victor Himbaugh in 1965, when he started buying Shure Vocalmasters at age 15 and rented them to local bands who needed a P.A. for a gig but didn’t have the budget to buy one. Victor and his wife, Cheryl bought into a music store in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood in 1971. By 1974, they had bought out the other four owners, became sole proprietors, and incorporated the business. That same year, the original Doo Wop Shop suffered damage from a tornado and was a complete loss. We regrouped and opened again across the street in our current location at 1587 Bardstown Road. Eventually, we opened stores in Frankfort in 1986 and Lexington in 1994.
Continuing the Tradition:
Today, Victor and Cheryl have (mostly) retired and turned over the reins to their son, Bill. Under Bill’s leadership, Doo Wop has added online rental reservations, delivery and setup options, and installation services. However, the guiding principles have never changed. We continue to strive to make event planning and music making accessible to all through reasonable pricing and rental options for virtually everything in the store.
